Wikirama

I've been editing the Port Orchard Library wiki that Wally set up and although most of it's been really straightforward, certain features have been extremely frustrating. I'm not sure why what you see in the editing mode doesn't correspond to the regular mode. Also, for some reason, I can't get the background color to be applied. Why????

I think that wikis can be a really useful tool--the library could really utilize them for things like patron book reviews, suggestions, etc. That being said, I know that at the reference desk, I'm hesitant to ever suggest Wikipedia as a credible resource.

YouTube

Although I've been hearing about YouTube for ages, I've never taken the time to check it out. Until now. What can I say? It's great. I love searching for images on Google and this is even better. But it's also dangerous--I could spend a very long time on YouTube. Better not.

Library Thing

I love Librarything! I created an account some months ago and since then have been adding to my list of things I've read. I'm up to 143 books (just the ones I can think of-I know I'm not remembering everything) and am getting close to the big 200. I probably won't opt to go beyond the 200 for $10/year though. Librarians Who Librarything is worth perusing every once in a while (especially for a laugh). Also, Librarything is handy for readers' advisory. I'm thinking about setting up another account to keep track of books I'd like to read...

Flickr

Although I probably won't be setting up a Flickr account anytime soon, I really like searching random tags, seeing the photos of my friend's pregnancy progression---but coolest of all is the geotags mode. Can you get any better than that? Not for a mapophile like me!

RSS

I find RSS feeds to be a great tool for daily updates on my favorite blogs although lately I haven't been checking any blogs daily--no time. I set up my account in Bloglines a month or so ago to experiment with this "push technology."

Del-icio-us

Del-icio-us is delicious. I've come to really rely on it at the reference desk, especially for specific sites and I miss so much the now obsolete FirstSearch button... Oh, well.

For this assignment I tagged some of my favorite sites including chocolateandzucchini.com (an excellent French cooking and baking blog) and ethnologue.com, a linguistics site (which comes in really handy when I just have to know which language family a specific language is a member of). I know, I know--never end your sentence with a preposition...

Hmm

Well, here I am posting on my brand new blog. What to say? I really enjoyed reading about the site 43 Things. I love it, I love it, I love it. I peruse it every once in a while when I need a certain kind of inspiration.

Also, read the Talis article Do Libraries Matter?. It's a good, relatively concise take on this timely subject. I thought the portion on ILL was really interesting--especially the bit about including library holdings in online bookstores as an alternative to purchasing materials. What a great idea. Though, wrought, I'm sure, with many issues.
